Each week, we will have a group discussion and students will complete activities. Please see file below "Stomp Novel Study" for the list of assigned activities.
English Marks Summary
Parents, please ask your child to see their recent marks summary. Please sign and return it to school. All students should have this sheet in their English binder.
Grade 7 and 8 students are currently writing a variety of poems. There are so many talented and creative young writers in these classes. I can't wait to read the rest of the poems they come up with
Due to a variety of unforeseen circumstances, our speeches and oral presentations have been delayed. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. I know how difficult public speaking can be and how hard it can be to cope when there are changes to the plan. Students who have not yet presented will do so next week. Thanks for understanding.

Speeches / Oral Presentations
This week, classes are starting to work on writing and preparing speeches (outlines are attached below). Students will also be given the option to create a Powerpoint presentation if they prefer not to do a formal speech.
Students can choose their own topic, although it is subject to teacher approval and should be a topic that will appeal to their audience (gr.7/8s).
In class presentations will begin on Fri. Feb. 3. The top two speeches from each class will be chosen to participate in the school wide public speaking competition on Feb. 16.
I look forward to hearing all of the interesting information presented during the in class presentations.
All English classes are currently finishing up their novels and literature circle activities. Students have shown their ability to analyze and connect to the characters in their novels, and we have had some very interesting group discussions.
Some novels that students have really enjoyed include:
Alexandria of Africa (Eric Walters)
The Lightning Thief (Rick Riordan)
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (John Boyne)
The Outsiders (S.E. Hinton)
Holes (Louis Sachar)
Freak the Mighty (Rodman Philbrick)
Speechless (Valerie Sherrard)
Run (Eric Walters)
Hatchet (Gary Paulsen)
Anne of Green Gables (L.M. Montgomery)
Hunger Games (Suzanne Collins)
Welcome to Mrs. Dyer's English page.
Throughout the year, I will post due dates, quizzes, assignments and updates here for parents and students. In the "File" section at the bottom of the page, I will add any handouts that students may need to access from home.
I'm looking forward to a great year! Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at firstname.lastname@example.org.
